Water play provides endless and amazing opportunities for babies to experience learning through their senses. Being in contact with water also has a calming effect on babies as it mimics the familiar environment akin to their mother’s womb.
Despite the various benefits and possibilities of water play, it is advisable for babies to play with water in the tub for 5 to 10 minutes. As babies, their immune systems are not fully developed. They also run the risk of catching chills as they are less able to conserve body heat. This is due to their high surface area to body mass ratio as compared with adults. Furthermore, prolonged contact with water may expose babies to become susceptible to infection given their underdeveloped immune system and low body heat retention.
Fret not! What’s most important is to watch your babies closely.
Remove them from the water after 5 to 10 minutes or if they show any signs of chills and dry them immediately. Protecting your babies’ health and well-being is of a higher priority than a play activity.
At the end of the day, just observe and understand your babies’ needs, and enjoy the parenting journey!
